Peter Mackey

19th Century Australian Landscape by Peter Mackey River Oil Painting

$350

We are lucky enough to from time to time, receive peices of art in the online store offices. This is a striking landscape by Irish born, Australian artist, Peter Mackey. An oil painting on firm board, this depicts blue toned mounts in the background, with trees moving slowly into a peaceful looking river.

It took us some time to track down to track down information on Peter Mackey, but we were eventually able to learn that he painted alongside and was a contemporary of Victorian painters Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton, who according to information provided by his great niece, often displayed their work in group exhibitions.

We understand that he was an optician and helped operate a gift and souvenir store in Marysville, although he stayed in Melbourne.

This beautiful piece was probably painted sometime between 1920 - 1940 and is a beautiful slice of Australian art history.
