Mary Shelley

1888 Edition Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley

$1,000

An incredible and rare find, this is an 1888 edition of Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein', arguably one of the most important books in both gothic and scientific fiction genres.

It is a small, pocket sized book with a beautiful patterned cover The book is bound in green fabric, with elegant metallic gold embellishment. The pages are unevenly trimmed and it has wear as you would expect of an item of it's era, including yellowing of the pages.

There is writing within the book itself, including on the inner cover, along with a stamp on the front page and small pencil writing on some of the pages.

One of the previous owners of this beautiful literary treasure was one Thomas Noye, who was the first teacher at the Willungu Public School in South Australia, a role to which he was appointed to in 1877 before moving on to become the Head Master at Glenels Primary School. He was there known to lend many of his own person books to the school library.

You can find a photograph of Thomas Noye here

He was also published in the prestigious scientific journal 'Nature', after he witnessed a double rainbow. you can find the article here!

We'd like to thank volunteer Peter for his dedication to researching this book and its history. Thanks to his efforts we were able to find the rather dashing photo of Thomas Noye, along with his published article.
